Rangiora Hotels

At the beginning of the Rangiora settlement, a Canterbury Association surveyor, C.O. Torlesse, the first European to have a permanent home there, generously gave hospitality and accommodation to visitors and travellers through the area.

Gradually hotels and accommodation houses became available to meet the increasing demands, these services sometimes being provided in association with other activities by the principals. Several of these establishments have come and gone, but four hotels have continued to the present day.

Hotels provided convenient facilities for several of the early community meetings and many important decisions were made within their hospitality. Later in the century, several of the publicans faced financial difficulties.
