John Sansom, 1854-1918

John Sansom was born in London in 1854. He came to New Zealand with his parents on the 'Ashburton', arriving 15 January 1858. The family first went to Kaiapoi, then to Rangiora where John finished his schooling.

On leaving school John drove a mail coach for his brother William. Later he took over his father's business as a baker and general storekeeper. His shop was on the corner of High and Church Streets and it traded for 70 years, providing the children from Rangiora Borough School with sweets and other items.

John Sansom was on the Rangiora Borough Council from 1888 to 1914, and was Mayor on three occasions - 1892-1894, 1901-1902 and 1912-1914.

John Sansom was a director of the Rangiora Building Society and for years was Captain of the Rifle Club. He was a well known chess player and it was largely due to him that the Rangiora Chess Club was formed. He was a member of the Borough School Committee and of the High School Board of Governors. He was a promoter of the Rangiora Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club and was President of the club for six years. He was a member of the Baptist Church but later changed to the Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the choir.

John Sansom married Margaret Jane Blackett in 1894. He died at St Albans on 20 April 1918 aged 64.
