Buildings in Rangiora High Street fail to meet building codes.

From January 2012, buildings in Rangiora's High Street were progressively closed as they were assessed as not meeting the standards required by new building codes and were earthquake-prone and dangerous. Fence cordons sprang up along High Street, including a three-high bank of shipping containers. For a while part of High Street was pedestrian only.

In 2012 a cluster of temporary shops was opened outside the Council Service Centre on High Street. These "pop-up" stores were officially opened on 26 June 2012 by the Prime Minister, John Key.

Demolition of some of the buildings along High Street began in July 2012.
